My Favourite Five

19 Aug 2010

When Kabiri asked me to select my top five pieces from the New Season collection, I was filled with anticipation as I had seen a few pieces come through that I had already earmarked as ‘winners’. The key word this season in jewellery circles is opulence. Finally we can embrace jewellery as a decorative art form giving us the perfect excuse to adorn and embellish in layers of gold chain and statement earrings. Luxury fine jewellery or extravagant costume design, Kabiri celebrates a new generation of cutting edge designers who, themselves, push the boundaries of jewellery, celebrating the heroic status that jewellery deserves, whilst embracing that fine balance between seasonal trend and timeless sustainability.

So for me, the influence of the catwalk in the form of rich colour combinations, exotic materials and sculptural detailing form the backdrop to my jewellery selection.

Autumn/Winter 2010 conjures up 1950s Prada silhouettes and ‘bow peep’ style Miu Miu mannequins. Golden glory resonates from McQueen’s rich brocades of ‘embossed luxe’ and Jason Wu’s ‘metallic foils’. Rodarte gives layered expression to the ‘chic nomad’ and the runway becomes a  parade of natural materials from Valentino’s feathers to Fendi’s fur .Then there’s the new ‘colour theory’ with the emergence of siren red and chartreuse in Marc Jacobs’ monotone from head to toe.

This autumnal cocktail of decadent imagery is echoed in these five pieces which I have chosen from the Kabiri collection to celebrate each of these key catwalk trends.
